AL SHORFA REPORTS ON THE INITIATION OF A MAJOR ARMY PUSH BY EGYPTIAN MILITARY TO CLEAR THE NORTH SINAI PENISNULA OF ISLAMIC ENEMY COMPONENTS ...//AL SHORFA HAS THE MOST DETAILED ACCT YET:

"The Egyptian army on Saturday (September 7th) launched a new offensive against armed extremist groups in north Sinai.

Security forces have intensified operations against al-Qaeda-linked elements in the peninsula in recent weeks, after an escalation of violence in the region that began in July.
The new operation is one of the most extensive in Sinai, official military spokesman Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali said in a statement on Sunday.
In co-ordination with police forces and backed by air cover, the army is "continuing the biggest security operation in northern Sinai, targeting terrorist hideouts and hotbeds" in the villages of al-Tuma, al-Zuhair, al-Gora, al-Zawaraa, al-Fotat, Gariaa and al-Maqdaba, he said.
Military forces have "raided 118 armed terrorist hideouts and destroyed weapon caches comprising large quantities of arms, ammunition, explosive belts and highly explosive devices", Ali said.

"They also have destroyed 33 vehicles equipped with heavy and medium weapons that had been used by these elements to attack army and police outposts and checkpoints in Sinai," he said.

"The on-going military operation in Sinai is two-tiered," said Ahmed Ulaiba, a security and counter-terrorism researcher at Al-Ahram Centre for Political and Strategic Studies.
"The first tier aims to eliminate the resources of the terrorist groups and cells by destroying their weapons caches and choking off all smuggling operations," he said, while the second involves striking their hideouts.
Strikes often take place in the mountains, not residential areas, he said.
"It has recently become difficult for terrorist elements to hide among the population because the people of Sinai support everything the army does in its operation to purge Sinai," Ulaiba said.
At the onset of the current operation, the army cut off communications in northern Sinai to isolate the armed cells and prevent them from communicating with each other, he said.
In this week's offensive, Egyptian security forces killed nine armed elements who exchanged gunfire with the troops, and arrested nine others who are now under investigation.
In late August, security forces arrested top al-Qaeda Sinai leader Adel Habbara, who later confessed to the murder of 25 off-duty policeman on the Arish-Rafah road.
"Preliminary indications of the results of the operation show that the [Egyptian armed] forces have made gains on the ground and that the military operation may continue for a few more weeks before the hotbeds of crime are eliminated," said security expert Maj. Gen. Fouad Allam.

Maj. Gen. Talaat Mousallem:  "With its on-going campaign, which is being carried out by the 2nd and 3rd armies, the air force and naval forces, as well as police counter-terrorism units, the government aims to purge the region entirely [of terrorists] and declare the Sinai terrorism-free".
